hear me gush over the maine

Where do I begin? It’s really hard to open up a story about something so amazing, I just want to dig right into it and let my emotions flow.

It all started off when I met them in February 2011, The Maine was one of the acts for LIV3 show, and we came there for Never Shout Never and We The Kings. I haven’t heard about them since, and my first time hearing them live didn’t really make me a fan in an instant.

The Maine for LIV3. 2011.

Fast forward to 2012, my sister and I were in another concert and they kept on playing Girls Do What They Want and Everything I Ask For while waiting for the show to start. We then figured out it was a song from The Maine and we started listening to them that moment.

Pioneer was their recent record when we started listening to them, and to be honest, it sounded very different from their previous records Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop and Black and White. Somehow we missed their boy-band/punk-rock vibe but as time passed, I started to appreciate its uniqueness and how well-thought Pioneer was. I can definitely say that Pioneer was a make or break for them, it’s either fans would love it or hate it. But turns out, everybody loved it and then came Forever Halloween. My favorites from this record are Identify, Some Days, Misery, When I’m at Home and Like We Did.

Pioneer. 2011.

forever halloween

It was 2013, when they released Forever Halloween, a 12-track album where they showed how great they are as an independent artist. I don’t know how they did it, but it must be their passion to create music that sets them apart from others. My favorites from this record are Run, Love and Drugs, and F**Ked up Kids. Shortly after, they also released a Deluxe version of FH and my favorites are Ugly on the Inside and Bliss.

Run – The Maine, Forever Halloween. 2013.

american candy

Then came 2015, I was graduating in college and American Candy was the best reward there is. American Candy was a subtle and smooth record for me. I mean, all of the songs in this track are amazing! Whenever I listen to this, it takes me back to the time when I celebrate with friends with our graduation and our board exams. My personal favorites for this record are English Girls, Am I Pretty?, (Un) Lost, and Another Night on Mars.

Am I Pretty – The Maine, American Candy. 2015.

lovely little lonely

After two years, The Maine released their new record, Lovely Little Lonely. It is a 12-track album again, but it’s different than the other records they put out there. The beautiful transitions in this album are flawless especially in Lovely to Black Butterflies and Deja Vu. The vibe they put into this record feels very mature for me and at the same time, all the words will hit you right in the soul. I don’t know, but they really keep getting better over time. My favorites from this record are Bad Behavior, Black Butterflies and Deja Vu, Taxi, and How Do You Feel?

Lovely Little Lonely. 2017.

you are ok

This year, The Maine has released another record called You are OK. They never fail to give their fans quality music and content, which may be why they take two years to produce another one. For us fans, we always look forward to listen to their new music, and waiting for The Maine is always worth it. You Are OK for me is really timely, and it’s like a reminder that whatever hard spots you’re hitting, you’ll always get by. My favorites from this record are Slip the Noose, Numb Without You, and Flowers on the Grave.

the maine as a band

I’ve been a fan girl since I was 16, and I followed lots of artists since. But, I already outgrew most of them, mainly because they changed music, and it just doesn’t feel the same anymore. Apparently, with The Maine, it feels really different. It’s like, I want them to be part of my life and, yeah it may sound corny and very cheesy but it is how it is. I met a lot of awesome people because of them, I listened to their music while I was still studying in college, up until I finished school and became a licensed professional, and now that I am in the working class, I still listen to them. The Maine has been really a part of my life and somehow, I want them to be a constant.

What sets them apart is their passion for music, and giving their 100% to the people who supports them. The Maine also do not allow their fans to pay for meet and greets during their shows. I think they are the only band that I know who are like that. And I love them for that.

Self-care is necessary

Ciao! It’s Chams. 🙂

I know there are days when you feel exhausted, lonely and sometimes, getting up in the morning is like the hardest thing to do. Don’t worry, you are not alone. I’ve been there too, and though it was not as easy to get away with that phase, I know that you can do it! 🙂 As for me, I practiced self care to help get myself together and be a brand new person. It was really helpful, because you know, the only person that can take the best care of yourself is YOU! So, here are some self-care ideas that you can try! Continue reading Self-care is necessary

Having Kids

“What the heck are you talking about? You’re only 22!”

That’s what I told myself when I wrote the title of this post.

I know, it’s a bit too early to talk about this. But you know, at some point in your life, you will be asked about your plans with regards to having your own family or having kids. It’s not like a bad thing to talk about though, but more like getting yourself prepared of what’s to come.

Mom told me it’s okay to get married at the age of 26. And if I think about it, I’m only 3 years and a few months away from that. Geez. It scares me. A lot. Like, I’m not even financially ready for it. I don’t have a life insurance. I can’t even look after myself. Could I be THAT responsible? Continue reading Having Kids

Favorite Pinoy Indie Film

[ first blog post ko ‘to in Filipino kaya nae-excite ako ]

Continue reading Favorite Pinoy Indie Film

Portrait Sessions Vol. I

Ciao! It’s Chams.

If you’ve been following me around, you’ll know that I am really into portraits. I made a post about my portrait photography story before and this time, I’m so excited to share with you all another set of photos I took.

So, I just bought my first prime lens earlier this week and I’m really excited to do some test shots. It is a Canon 50mm f1.8 prime lens that I bought for a very cheap price. As usual, I asked my friend Pauline to shoot with me. We didn’t have any location in mind, so we just randomly took photos on the mall we were in.

Luckily, we found Timezone and the lights from the arcade were so beautiful! The neon lights really gave out life in every photos. I was really trying to edit like Brandon Woelfel but this is all that I can come up with. Continue reading Portrait Sessions Vol. I

My Portrait Photography Story

Ciao! It’s Chams. I have been into photography lately, and I really love taking portraits. I just want to share with you all my portrait photography story. My inspirations, my style, and how I do it. 🙂

Getting inspirations

Before I started blogging, I was really a YouTube junkie. I always watch a lot of YouTubers, and one of my favorites is Nadine Felice. She is a Filipina YouTuber who does beauty, lifestyle, vlogs and pep talk videos. I always liked her content and aesthetics, then I came across to one of her vlogs where she did portrait photography with her friends. I became super interested with portrait photography so I tweeted her and asked, “Nades, how do you shoot portraits?!” Her reply was “Watch Jessica Whitaker on YouTube!” So, I immediately went over to Jessica’s channel and watched her videos. She does portrait photography behind-the-scenes videos and she shares her photography tips and tricks as well. I really like her style and her resourcefulness, because she does not use any photography accessories and her tutorials are fit for beginners like me.

Start of something new

camera used: Canon 1100D

After getting all the inspirations online, I tapped my good friend Pauline to shoot with me, because she’s also a photography enthusiast. We brought our own cameras and met up one afternoon. We literally had no idea how to start shooting, and we at least tried to do few poses at the mall parking lot before we head over to our target location. We did not expect that it would be that fun! We thought it would be really awkward at first, but we felt the opposite.

We started shooting at around 4 in the afternoon, photographers call it the “golden hour” because the sun gives off a redder and softer light in photos. Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset. We really loved the natural light and how it really highlighted the photos we took.

As I’ve mentioned before, we started shooting at a mall parking lot to test-shot photos and to condition ourselves. It was an open parking space at the rooftop and we really liked it. We then moved to University of the Philippines and found a newly-built building with lots of cute walls. Good thing, there were few people there so the whole place was ours! Yay!

We didn’t really talked about our style before Pauline and I went for the shoot. But we kind of did retro aesthetic for this. She wore a white ringer tee, denim jeans and white sneakers that she paired with cute socks. I really liked her style, it was really simple but it gave out a nice statement. 🙂

Since I don’t have any fancy photo editing software, like Photoshop or Lightroom, I just processed the photos with VSCO with the free presets. I used C1 and P5 presets for some of the photos.

As beginners, we really think we did a great job and we also learned a lot from our first shoot. The struggle for me was my camera, because the camera I used is our 5-year old Canon 1100D, and the kit lens were a bit old and the autofocus is not working anymore. I really find it hard to use manual focus because of my blurry vision and sometimes, when the light is too bright. Nevertheless, it was really fun and I’ve learned a lot! I can’t wait to post more of my portrait stories. 🙂

Sunday Devotional

Ciao! It’s Chams. I would just like to share my favorite devotional at the moment. I don’t know, but maybe some of you might need this to get by your daily struggles. And, here is a little reminder that someone is in charge of your life. 🙂

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (NIV)

– Psalm 73:26

There is a great sense of comfort in this verse. God has planted Himself so deep in our hearts that we are forever His children. No matter what may happen to our bodies or how depressed we become, we can always depend on God to be our hope. Through Him we have overcome everything. If you find yourself weak, know that you have hope. He considers you to be precious and will always be there for you. Ask God to be your strength in your delicate times.

I hope you loved that devotional as much as I do. I actually got this devotional from “Devotion” on the App Store. The app is free, and I recommend you to get this as well because it really enriches your faith and reminds you everyday of His love. Happy Sunday! 🙂
